About West Duwamish Greenbelt

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is a large urban forest located in the southwestern part of Seattle, Washington, adjacent to the Duwamish River’s western bank. Spanning several hundred acres, this greenbelt represents one of the few extensive natural forested areas remaining within an urban setting, providing critical habitat for native flora and fauna. Dominated by second-growth coniferous trees such as Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock, it also features thick understory composed of ferns, salal, and native shrubs. The greenbelt plays a vital ecological role by supporting birds like barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and occasional sightings of bald eagles, as well as small mammals native to the region. Historically, this area was part of the traditional lands of the Duwamish Tribe and played a role in early timber and logging activity before urban development began encroaching. Today, the greenbelt offers urban residents and visitors peaceful walking paths and nature trails that interconnect with nearby parks and residential neighborhoods. Key recreation opportunities include hiking, birdwatching, and casual nature walks, often enjoyed as a quiet retreat from the bustling city. Notable landmarks within or near the greenbelt include viewpoints overlooking the Duwamish River, and the proximity to the Duwamish Waterway Trail provides additional riverfront access. The greenbelt is managed by a combination of city, state, and community organizations focused on restoration and stewardship to maintain its ecological integrity within an urban environment.
